Mathias Kunfermann
«Mathias photographs the world.» With this idea in mind, he captures moments while on the road, creating compelling photo series, mostly in black and white. His images are characterized by depth, subtlety, and a quietly impressive impact. As part of his artistic journey, Mathias explores structures, landscapes, and the sea, often seeking out ephemeral, abstract motifs that blur the lines between photography and painting.

Mathias Kunfermann, born in 1966, lives with his family in Valbella, Canton of Grison in Switzerland. After training as a mechanical engineer and longer study stays in the USA, he embarked on journeys, particularly to Malaysia and Southeast Asia. These experiences sparked his passion for photography and initiated an intensive engagement with visual composition and technique. In 1992, Kunfermann presented his first exhibition in Thusis, and since 1996, he has been working as an independent photographer and is the owner of demateo AG in Thusis.
Artistic Process
In 2016, he and his wife Laetizia, along with their two sons, took a "Time Out" on La Réunion to further develop his photographic style. This journey led him on an artistic quest around the world that culminated in Murmansk, Russia, in 2018: in freezing temperatures, he captured striking images of drifting ice floes—photos that have had a lasting impact on his current style.

Kunfermann prefers monochromatic, two-dimensional photography that often teeters on the boundary between painting and photography. His work emerges from remote locations, far from tourist paths—a conscious search for nothingness and pure visual language. Transience and abstraction are central elements in his works, where time and space dissolve.
